more about the Wilcox House...

East Grand Rapids' own Wilcox Estate might well have been the setting for Jay Gatsby's palatial home as Fitzgerald describes that mansion in his masterpiece, "The Great Gatsby".  This May, the magnificent local estate will be on view as the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra's 2010 Showhouse.  The building, with its 3 graceful arched entrances was designed by prominent Grand Rapids architect Kenneth W. Welch.  It was built as a community house by Carolyn Wilcox, widow of Frederick P. Wilcox, a Grand Rapids real estate developer.

Originally, the structure housed a swimming pool, squash courts, a conservatory, two apartments and space for a number of automobiles.  Much of the vintage brick used in the house was from the old Stocking school and used to give the home the feeling of a Mediterranean Villa.

From May 1 through May 23, the home will be transformed by Grand Rapids' finest decorating talent.  Stay tuned for a calendar of events to see this destination home, located at 701 Laurel Circle.
